Child Nutrition
WELCOME TO ARAB CITY SCHOOLS'
CHILD NUTRITION PROGRAM
The Child Nutrition department is made up of a team of food and nutrition professionals that are dedicated to students' health, well being and their ability to learn. We support learning by promoting healthy habits for lifelong nutrition and fitness practices.
Meals, foods and beverages sold or served at our schools meet state and federal requirements which are based on the USDA Dietary Guidelines. We provide students with access to a variety of affordable and appealing foods that meet the health and nutrition needs of our students.
The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) is a federally assisted meal program operating in public and nonprofit private schools and residential child care institutions. It provides nutritionally balanced, low-cost or free lunches to children each school day. The program was established under the National School Lunch Act, signed by President Harry Truman in 1946.
It is our priority to meet the needs of all students, therefore, please let us know if your child has any food allergies or other special dietary needs. We have a diet prescription form that should be completed by your child's physician. The form should be returned to the school nurse as soon as possible. We must have this form on file in the cafeteria in order to accommodate your child's need. The school nurse and cafeteria staff will work together to create a meal that meets the student's special diet. A new diet prescription should be completed every year and any time there are changes to your child's diet during the current school year.
Meal applications are available at each school for students who may qualify for free or reduced priced breakfast and lunch. Applications should be completed and returned to the student’s homeroom teacher, front office of the school, or the Central Office. Applications are confidentially processed at the Central Office. You will receive notification from the school once your application has been processed.
